Quite often I want to show a video to my friends and don't want to use Youtube, Facebook Video or Instagram Stories.
Yes, I also do use Youtube, but sometimes I want something quick and simple and private. I don't want to show it to the whole world. No registration, just upload a video, get a direct link that's easy to share, and then, after some time, delete it and that's it.
You need a special video hosting site. That's the easiest way.
I have found 27 free video hosts (updated on November 2024)
Looking for a place to upload videos? An MP4 hosting? A WebM host? Or a place to store and share MKV files? It's there. Or you want to share something anonymously and looking for a fast video hosting sites without registration? There are many sites like Youtube you can use.
Or do you need to place a huge video file somewhere? There are several platforms that accept very large media files. So choose a hosting platform that will suit your needs and host your video file(s) there.

Let's say that you want to send a high quality video to a friend and you don't want to publish it on Youtube or Facebook. But how to send it through email? It's too large. For example Gmail doesn't accepts anything larger than 25MB. And Facebook Messenger has the same filesize limit.
What now? What are the other options?
You can either cut and shrink the file in an editor. But you'll have to sacrifice the quality.
Or you can upload it a cloud storage you already have, like Google Drive, Onedrive or Dropbox.
Or there is another easy solution.
Send it via one of the file sending sites, that will let you upload it and get a direct link to download. Do you need to send 1GB? 5GB? 100GB? No problem.
Select the file, add a recipients email and a message and that's it. The file will be automatically deleted after a certain time. Or you can set it up to delete after it'll be downloaded defined number of times.
Here are a few sites I use and can recommend:
Windows Media Player is not good enough? I understand, it's not bad, but you need something better.
For the past few years, I have been using the VLC media player 3.0.20. It's open-source, runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and it can play everything.
So far I did not find any video that was not supported. Sometimes it's lagging when playing audio and video over the network. But you can adjust that in settings. If you are struggling with lagging, try:
I have found that on some computers/networks is the VLC player lagging, no matter what I do. So I have been searching for an alternative video player and found Media Player Classic. Very similar (not bloated) interface to VLC, can play everything, small and free. It's not under development since 2017, but it works without any problems.
If you need to record what's going on your desktop (very usefull if you want to record an online meeting/webinar in Zoom or Skype) the best way will be to use OBS 30.0.2. It's the best and open source software for recording and streaming. Easy to use and really works. I have tried several tools and never had a problem with OBS. Easy to capture audio & video in real time, no choppy recordings, no corupted video files, no problems with long recordings.
Do you need to edit the video before uploading? Convert is into another format? Crop and maybe add different music/sound, fade-in, fade-outs, or add some text? Then you need an editor. I have started with Windows Movie Maker (no longer available in Windows 10 - it is now replaced with Photos app).
But very soon I needed something better. I have started using Kdenlive ( now in version 23.08.4 ) - an open-source video editing software. It is simple to use but offers advanced editing tools.
And after a few weeks (for no obvious reason) it started to be VERY slow. So slow that it was unable to use it. The video preview was very choppy.
I have tried updating Kdenlive to the latest version. I have modified proxy clip settings. I have checked my computer. And nothing.
So, I had to look for a new tool. And I have found Shotcut 24.01.28 - another open-source editor. I'm still learning to use it, but I have already edited several clips and so far I'm very pleased with it.
Here are a few more options you can try:
And if you need to do just a rough cut of large video file from your camera to save space, use LosselessCut 3.59.1 - it's very fast and works on almost any platform.
I don't do it very often, but from time to time I need to upload a video directly from my phone and I need to edit it a little before uploading. In that case, I currently use VN Video Editor Maker - for my needs (just very basic editing and cuts) it's OK. It's free and no watermark.
SampleFocus, Soundpacks, SampleSwap, Looperman
My preferred sources of free photos that can be used in videos are Stockvault, Pexels, Pixabay and Unsplash. If you want more options check out this list.
(copyright free, no watermark, even for commercial use)
Still don't know which to choose? Either keep yout video content in the original format or convert it into MP4.
Where is MKV? MKV is not a compression format. It's a container file were is video, audio and subtitles in a single file.
I can recommend you Handbrake 1.7.2. It' a free and open-source tool that will help you converting video from & to almost any format. It can also rip a DVD or Blu-ray disc to a file. Available for Windows, Linux and also for Mac.
One tip for DVD ripping in Handbrake: if you have a problem with audio, change audio codec from AAC-avcodec (the default seetings) to MP3.
Another interesting tool is XMediaRecode 3.5.8.9 - it can convert almost all video (and audio) formats including 3GP, 3GPP, 3GPP2, AAC, AC3, ADTS, AMR, ASF, AVI, AVISynth, DVD, FLAC, FLV, H.261, H.263, H.264, H.265, M4A , M1V, M2V, M4V, Matroska (MKV), MMF, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, TS, TRP, MP2, MP3, MP4, MP4V, MOV, QT, OGG, PSP, RM, (S ) VCD, SWF, VOB, WAV, WebM, WMA and WMV.
For conversion of video to GIF you can use GIPHY - simple to use online tool.
And if you need to burn it on a DVD, download CDBurnerXP 4.5.8.7128 - a free application to burn CDs and DVDs, including Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs.
Try to search for "download video from youtube" and you'll find many sites offering such functionality. But almost no works. Instead, these will show you tons of ads, pop-ups, and misleading links. Avoid these online tools and download a simple command-line tool that works - yt-dlp 2023.12.30. Yes, it's command line. There is no graphical interface. But, don't worry, if you are not an experienced user.
It's really easy to use. Just type youtube-dl.exe and after space place the Youtube URL you want to download. And that's it!
Example: yt-dlp.exe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw
It is the amount of video data that must be transferred and processed in a certain period of time. If you want a number to get a better idea, a Full HD has a birate of 35MB per minute (very roughly, depends on a codec).
For audio editing I use Audacity 3.4.2. Great open source tool for simple audio editing, but very powerful if needed. Works on Windows, MacOS and Linux.
If you need something better (bigger storage, more or even unlimited bandwidth, reliable customer support, ad-free player or video analytics) and you are willing to pay for it, here is a list of paid hosts:
If you don't want to use any external service for your videos, there are several HTML5 video players. Install, setup and embed videos. If you want a reliable, fast and cheap VPS provider, check SSDNodes.
Tip for selfhosting: to be sure that everybody (in all browsers) will see it, you have to upload mp4, webm and ogv.
I have found a very easy way how to embed an RTSP stream into a webpage. Use online service RTSP.ME. Enter your RTSP link, your email, and select a close datacenter and that's it. You'll get an HTML code to place into your webpage (a confirmation email will be in your inbox).
The RTSP link you should find either in the camera manual or in the administration section. But sometimes it harder. For example, my friend's cam is Uniview and I couldn't find it. So in case you use Uniview cam, the direct link for the main RTSP stream is rtsp://username:password@IPADDRESS:554/media/video1
If you don't want to or can't download and install a special tool, you can try one of the online editors:
If you need to show pressed keys in your recordings, and the thecorder doesn't offer this function, there are several tools:
If you run a site that isn't listed, link back to Videohostings.com email me all the details you can. At least name, URL, maximum filesize allowed, allowed file formats, if you offer direct link, if it's possible to upload videos without registration or you have to create a free account and how long will the uploaded file stay (when it'll be deleted). I'll be happy to add your video host.
